A brain tumour is a mass or growth of abnormal cells in your brain. Most patients suffering from brain tumours seek treatment in metro cities, leading to a loss of valuable time for the patient.

A 48-year-old lady was brought to the emergency at Orchid Medical Centre with complaints of multiple episodes of seizures. She was diagnosed with a form of brain tumour known as insular glioma. These tumours are very close to areas of the brain that control power in the limbs of the opposite side. Surgery in this region carries a high risk of paralysis. To increase patient safety, such surgeries can be done by keeping the patient awake, so that the arm and leg movements can be monitored while the tumour is being removed. These surgeries are known as awake craniotomy and require technical expertise from both surgery and anaesthesia teams. The above-mentioned patient was managed through an awake surgery, performed by Dr Vikram Singh (Neurosurgeon), Dr Amit Gupta (Anaesthetist) and Dr Vaibhav Tulsyan (Anaesthetist). During the surgery, the patient was repeatedly asked questions and asked to move her arms and legs. The surgery was successfully conducted over 5 hours. Following surgery, the patient had an uneventful course in hospital and did not have any complications or paralysis.
